NCAA Release
Apr. 27, 2009 - North Central College wrestler
Ben Youel has been named as one of 58 winter student-athletes to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. The NCAA announced its selections on Monday.
Youel, who placed second in the 165-pound class at the NCAA Division III National Championships in March to earn All-America honors for the second straight year, is a three-time National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-America selection and a four-time Academic All-College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin honoree. He has been North Central's Jack Swartz Academic All-Conference selection for each of the past three winter sports seasons.
The winners (29 men and 29 women) represent winter-sports participants who will receive one-time, nonrenewable grants of $7,500. The NCAA will name postgraduate scholars for spring sports later this year.
The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition. The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women.
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports.
