SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (Apr. 8, 2009) - The North Central College baseball team lost for a third straight time to Wheaton College on Wednesday, coming out on the short end of a 16-4 decision at Alexian Field.
The setback leaves the Cardinals' record at 3-13 for the season and 2-6 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin competition, while the Thunder improved to 12-13 and 5-4.
Wheaton opened the game by scoring twice in the first inning, including an unearned run. The Cardinals returned the favor with a pair of runs in the top of the second on a triple by
Steve Hlavac and a single by
Nick Robinson.
The score was knotted at 2-2 until the bottom of the third, when the Thunder strung together three runs on five hits to pull ahead, 5-2. The rally spurred Wheaton on to a surge of 11 runs in the following three innings.
The final two North Central runs came via an RBI single by
Justin Moriarty in the fourth and a base hit by
Joe Turek in the seventh.
Turek and
Michael Corrigan each went 2 for 4 at the plate for the Cardinals.
Scott Randecker pitched the first three innings and took the loss (0-1), yielding seven earned runs on seven hits.
North Central travels to Elmhurst College on Friday for a CCIW double header. Play is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
