CHICAGO (May 5, 2009) - The North Central College baseball team lost to the University of Chicago for a second time this season on Tuesday, as the Maroons handed the Cardinals an 8-4 defeat at J. Kyle Anderson Field.
Chicago (18-11) overcame an early deficit and added the victory to the 13-10 win it recorded over the Cardinals at North Central on Apr. 17.
Dan Scott led off the game with a double for the Cardinals, and he later scored on another two-bagger by
Matt Abraham. Two batters later, Abraham came around to score on a single by
Andrew Wulbecker, leaving the visitors with a 2-0 advantage.
The Maroons halved North Central's lead with a run in the second, though the Cardinals countered with a run in the third.
Steve Hlavac singled and stole second base, then scored on Abraham's single up the middle.
The hosts strung together four hits and took advantage of a pair of walks to score three fourth-inning runs and take their first lead of the day, 4-3, then added an unearned run in the fifth inning to increase their edge to two runs.
Nick Robinson's one-out single in the sixth brought in a run and got the Cardinals back to within one run of the lead at 5-4, but Chicago closed the door in the bottom of the seventh, getting a three-run double from third baseman Stephen Williams.
Abraham went 3 for 4 at the plate for North Central, while Wulbecker was 3 for 5.
Tyler Herman pitched the first three innings and took the loss (0-3), allowing three earned runs on seven hits.
The Cardinals wrap up the 2009 season on Sunday, hosting Chicago in a double header. Action at Zimmerman Stadium is set to begin at noon.
