ORANGE, Calif. (Dec. 12, 2010)-- North Central College closed out its two-game tour of the Golden State on Sunday, suffering an 80-58 setback to host Chapman University in a non-conference women's basketball game at the Hutton Center.
North Central (3-4) trailed by just six at the half, thanks in part to shooting 50 percent (13-for-26) from the field during the opening 20 minutes of play, but was unable to keep pace with Chapman (6-3) down the stretch as the Panthers hit 61.5 percent (16-for-26) of their shots in the second half.
Chapman scored the game's first four points and built a five-point advantage with 18:22 remaining in the first half before the Cardinals scored 10 of the next 12 points to secure their biggest advantage of the afternoon with just over 16 minutes remaining.
Christine Karl scored six of the 10 points during the run with
Emily Collins contributing a pair of buckets.
The Panthers quickly responded, stringing together seven straight points to regain the lead before the Cardinals mounted their second surge of the half, reclaiming the lead at 21-20 off a pair of
Kelsey Stone free throws with just over 10 minutes remaining. The lead proved to be the Cardinals' last of the afternoon, as Chapman enjoyed a 36-30 advantage at the break after Tara Glennon hit a three-pointer with two ticks remaining.
Chapman enjoyed a double-digit advantage for most of the second half, capitalizing on some hot shooting and limiting the Cardinals to shooting just 35 percent (seven-for-20) from the floor.
Two Cardinals ended the day in double figures with
Jackie Errico leading the way with a team-high 14 points. Errico additionally grabbed seven boards and dished out three assists while
Christine Karl tallied 11 points and a team-high three blocks and four steals. Collins finished with nine points and a team-high eight rebounds while
Helen Muleya dished out a game-high five assists.
Four Panthers ended the game in double figures, led by Brandi Hood's game-high 19 points. Mary Petrie had 15 points while Tara Glennon and Simone Ibbotson chipped in 14 and 10 points, respectively.
North Central enjoyed a 33-21 rebounding advantage and finished the game shooting 43.5 percent (20-for-46) while Chapman hit 52.6 percent (30-for-57) of its shots during the game, including 43.8 percent (seven-for-16) from three-point range.
The Cardinals' road trip continues on Thursday, Dec. 16, facing Greenville College at 6 p.m.
