Cardinals Take Series with Red Men

KENOSHA, Wis. (Apr. 18, 2010) -
The North Central College baseball team finished off its fourth straight College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin series victory on Sunday, losing an 11-7 decision to Carthage College in the completion of a game started Saturday before a 7-4 victory over the Red Men at the Carthage Baseball Field.

The Cardinals (20-5, 9-3 CCIW) remain tied for first place in the CCIW standings with North Park University. North Central won its season series with North Park, along with series victories over Elmhurst College and Millikin University.

North Central opened the scoring in the first inning of the series' second game on Saturday, when Nick Robinson scored on a double play. Carthage (15-11, 7-5 CCIW) scored four runs on six hits in the third inning to pull in front, though the Cardinals scored on a sacrifice fly by Robinson in the third and added three runs in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Matt Burke and a two-run single by Dan Scott to take a 5-4 lead.

Carthage's Joey Aiello and Burke exchanged two-run doubles in the fifth, and the Red Men's Trevor Whately delivered an RBI single to tie the game at 7-7 after six innings. The Red Men scored three runs on five hits in the top of the seventh inning to pull ahead, 10-7, before the game was suspended due to darkness.

When play resumed at Carthage on Sunday, the Red Men added a run on Aiello's RBI double and set the last five North Central batters in order to close out  the victory.

Burke went 2 for 3 with three runs batted in, while Scott was 2 for 3 with two RBI and two walks and Peter Romanello was 2 for 4 with two runs scored.

The Red Men opened the scoring in the first inning of the series finale, getting an RBI double from Tim Hansen, before North Central took control with a four-run rally with two outs in the third inning. Michael Corrigan got the rally started with an RBI double, and Joe Turek turned in a two-run single before Andrew Wulbecker drove in a run with a base hit.

Corrigan plated another run with a single in the fourth inning, and Burke and Peter Romanello scored on errors in the seventh to put the Cardinals in front, 7-1.

Corrigan and Steve Hlavac each went 3 for 4 in the game, while Nick Robinson was 3 for 5. Nate Arenson improved his pitching record to a perfect 6-0, allowing four runs in 7 2/3 innings. Kevin Krajewski pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn his second save.

Winners of 20 games in a season for the first time since 2004, the Cardinals return to action Wednesday when they host  the University of Chicago in a non-conference game at Zimmerman Stadium. Action is scheduled to get under way at 3 p.m.
