BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (Apr. 17, 2010)-- The North Central College men's tennis team returned to the win column on Saturday, defeating Saint Ambrose University, 6-3, before rallying taking down host Illinois Wesleyan University, 5-4, to close out the afternoon at the Beadles-Morse Courts.
The Cardinals (4-12, 1-2 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) grabbed the early lead against non-conference foe St. Ambrose (5-13), winning two of three doubles matches. The 13th-ranked doubles tandem of
Matt Boguslawski and
Sam Sweeney breezed past the Fighting Bees' No. 1 duo of Luke Ebener and Michael Medehill, 8-1, while at No. 3,
Andrew McKinley and
Naveed Heydari tripped up Nicolas Goodknight and Mike Flynn, 8-3.
In singles, third-ranked Sweeney picked up the victory at No. 1, holding a 5-0 lead before Ebener retired due to injury. At No. 2, Boguslawski defeated Ryan Vretis, 6-1, 6-1 with
Josh Clay winning over Flynn by an identical score at No. 6 singles. McKee tallied the Cardinals' fourth singles win of the match, rolling past Goodnight, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5.
Against the host Titans (11-3, 2-2 CCIW), the Cardinals dropped two of three doubles matches before capturing four of six singles matches to pull out the one-point victory, sending IWU just its third defeat of the year.
Boguslawski and Sweeney concluded the afternoon undefeated, taking down the Titan's No. 1 doubles squad of Brian Pietrowski and Tom Deschler, 9-7, improving to 13-3 on the season and remaining perfect against non-ranked opposition.
In singles, Sweeney continued his dominance within the CCIW, downing Pietrowski, 6-0, 6-1, to improve to 13-2 on the year and remain undefeated against conference opponents. At No. 2, Boguslawski upped his singles record to 8-7 on the season, taking down Deschler, 6-3, 6-1, while McKee and Clay each recorded their second straight singles victories of the day at No. 5 and No. 6. McKee topped Steven Hayman, 6-3, 6-4, while Clay tipped Sandeep Kola, 6-2, 6-4.
The Cardinals return to the courts on Monday, traveling to Wheaton College for a CCIW dual match, beginning at 4 p.m.
