BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (May 7, 2010)-- The North Central College men's tennis squad split a pair of matches on Friday in the opening day of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament at the Evergreen Racquet Club, earning a spot in Saturday's third-place match. The Cardinals topped Illinois Wesleyan University, 5-3, in the opening round before falling to top-seeded Carthage College, 5-1.

Singles matches were contested first against Illinois Wesleyan (14-8) with Sam Sweeney breezing past Brian Piotrowski, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 1 position. Eric McKee downed Steven Hayman, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 5 while Josh Clay earned the, 6-4, 6-0, decision at No. 6.

Sweeney and Matt Boguslawski whitewashed the Titans' Piotrowski and Tom Deschler, 8-0, at No. 1 doubles while Chris Bennorth and Naveed Heydari edged Sandeep Kola and Michael Christison, 9-8 (7-3) in the tiebreaker in No. 2 action. The No. 3 doubles match was not completed as the Cardinals had already secured enough matches for the victory.

In the nightcap, Carthage (15-8) captured four of five singles matches and the lone completed doubles match, securing the necessary five match wins to advance to the championship round.

Clay emerged with the Cardinals' lone victory, winning after Alex McLean retired in the decisive third set with the score, 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 0-1 at No. 6 singles. Sweeney suffered his first defeat against a conference foe at No. 1, as the Red Men's Jack Schiro escaped with the, 6-3, 7-5, win, ending Sweeney's six-match win streak. Boguslawski held a, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 3-5 lead against Sammy Ramoni at No. 2 singles before the match was suspended as the Red Men's No. 3 doubles squad secured the victory with an 8-1 decision over Clay and Eric McKee.

The Cardinals (7-14) return to the courts tomorrow at 1:30 p.m., facing either Augustana College or Wheaton College in the CCIW third-place match.
