Sept. 22, 2010-- All three goals came off set plays as the University of Dubuque (Iowa) snapped North Central College's three-game home winning streak, downing the Cardinals, 2-1, Wednesday night in a non-conference women's soccer game at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
The Spartans (4-3-2) opening the scoring in the 31st minute, as Katrina Caserez drilled a free kick from just outside box, putting the visitors up 1-0. Dubuque would maintain the lead heading into the halftime break, outshooting the hosts by a 5-1 margin.
Alexandra Watkins scored off a Sara Fassbinder corner kick in the 74th minute to give the Spartans a two-goal buffer before
Dominique Collins countered with a goal of her own in the 90th minute, scoring unassisted off a free kick, beating the Dubuque keeper from a shot from 35-yards out. The goal proved to be too little too late for the Cardinals (4-3), who suffer their first home loss of the year.
After getting outshot in the opening half, the Cardinals held an 8-7 edge in shots the second 45 minutes of play and held a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal during the match.
Amy Frazzini recorded four saves in goal for the Cardinals, logging all 90 minutes while her counterpart, Natalie Baker turned away six shots on the night.
North Central returns to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 25, traveling to Holland, Mich. to face Hope College. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m. (Eastern Time).
