Sept. 27, 2010-- The North Central College women's tennis team picked up a trio of close victories on the road over the weekend, defeating Central College (Iowa) and host Augustana College by identical 5-4 scores on Saturday in Moline, Ill. before edging Cornell College (Iowa) 5-4 on Sunday in Mount Vernon, Iowa.
The Cardinals (9-2, 3-2 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) began the day on Saturday against non-conference foe Central (6-4) by opening the match with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches. North Central held on in singles, winning three of six to escape with the victory.
Against host Augustana (8-3, 4-2 CCIW), the Cardinals dropped two of three doubles matches with
Alicia DeGrado and Margaret Youel picking up the team's lone doubles victory with an 8-6 win over the Vikings' Samantha Tonn and Krista Panko in No. 2 action. In singles,
Cory Schillerstrom edged Shannen McNamara, 7-6, 7-6, at No. 1 while
Katie Hatch downed Panko, 6-3, 7-5, at the No. 5 position.
Abigail Conover needed three sets to dispose Tonn at No. 3, winning, 6-3, 2-6, 6-0, while
Stephani Brunetti rallied from an opening set defeat to win, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 6.
North Central found itself in a similar predicament against Cornell (4-3) on Sunday with Brunetti and
Allison Ignarski emerging as the Cardinals' only winner in doubles, once again heading into the singles portion of the match trailing 2-1. Brunetti and Ignarski edged the Ram's No. 3 tandem of Devin Harmon and Kathleen Ellis, 9-7. In singles, North Central produced victories from its No. 1, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 players to extend the squad's dual match win streak to three.
Schillerstrom breezed by Samantha De Gannes, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 1 while Conover downed Alyssa Zavislak, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 3. Brunetti edged Harmon, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, at No. 5 while Ignarski prevailed, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 6.
North Central returns to the courts on Wednesday, Sept. 29, facing CCIW-rival Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis. at 4 p.m.
