ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (Jan. 22, 2011)-- Utilizing a balanced scoring attack, the North Central College women's basketball team returned to the win column on Saturday afternoon with a 68-64 victory over host Augustana College in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin game inside the Carver Center.
Jackie Errico drilled a three-pointer with 42 seconds remaining, breaking a 64-64 deadlock while
Emily Collins tacked on a free-throw with four ticks left as the visiting Cardinals (6-11, 2-4 CCIW) held on for their first conference road triumph of the season in a game featuring five lead changes and 11 ties.
Augustana (4-13, 0-6 CCIW) accounted for the game's opening five points before the Cardinals responded with a 9-0 run, taking the lead on a
Jenny Swanson three with 16:30 remaining, eventually building a 9-5 advantage. The Vikings scored the next six points to take the 13-11 lead as the two teams traded jabs the rest of the first half with the hosts taking a 32-30 edge into the halftime intermission.
With the score tied at 36 three minutes into the second half, North Central mounted a 13-2 run, building a game-high 11-point advantage with 12:17 remaining. The Vikings responded over the next five minutes with an 11-0 run to tie the contest. Neither team led by more than four the rest of the way with Augustana's last lead coming with just under four minutes to play.
Errico paced the Cardinals with 13 points and five rebounds while also dishing out four assists.
Christine Karl added 11 points while
Emily Collins chipped in 10 points and five boards.
Jenny Swanson,
Sophie Newson and
Helen Muleya all added seven points. Swanson additionally tallied six assists.
Molly Etheridge came off the bench and led the Vikings with 15 points. Kristen Fox added 14 while Whitney Miller and Kristin Warnken added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
North Central shot 44.8 percent (26-for-58) from the field, including 51.7 percent (15-for-29) in the second half while limiting Augustana to just 37.3 percent (25-for-67) from the floor.
The Cardinals return to the hardwood on Tuesday night, facing Elmhurst College at 7:30 p.m. inside Gregory Arena.
