CARTHAGE, Wis. (Jan. 8, 2011)-- Katie Stratton won the 100-yard breaststroke as the North Central College swimming teams resumed competition on Saturday, sending a partial squad to the Carthage College Invitational inside the Koenitzer Aquatic Center.
The meet was the team's first competition since facing Costa Rican club team Asociación Brumosa de Natación on Dec. 11.
Stratton claimed the 100-yard breaststroke by a comfortable margin, touching the wall in 1:08.68 while
Kathleen Fultz finished seventh in 1:21.88. Stratton additionally tallied a runner-up finish in the 200-yard breaststroke, stopping the clock in 2:31.71.
Kelsey Tumpane finished fourth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:22.82) and fifth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:28.04) while
Loreli Patschke tallied a fourth place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.51). Patschke also tallied a pair of seventh place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (26.69) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:05.22).
For the men,
Sean Broucek placed eighth in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in 1:01.85 while teammate
Robb Showalter was one spot back in ninth in 1:01.94. Broucek also placed 10th in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:15.64.
Jake Nurczyk clocked a 1:57.46 to place ninth in the 200-yard freestyle while finishing 11th in the 100-yard butterfly (58.87) and 12th in the 100-yard freestyle (52.67).
The invitational was scored as a series of duals with the host Lady Reds defeating the Cardinal women, 205-52, while Division II Lewis University topped the Cardinals 183-61. On the men's side, the Cardinals fell 222-21 to the host Red Men, 182-35 to Lewis and 219-21 to Big Ten Conference member Northwestern University.
North Central returns to the pool on Friday for day one of the two day University of Chicago Invitational.
