WHEATON, Ill. (Oct. 15, 2011)-- The North Central College women's soccer team was defeated at the hands of 4th ranked Wheaton College, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at Wheaton's Joe Bean Stadium.
The Cardinals (5-7) took an early lead right out of the gate as
Hope Stayer scored her team leading 5th goal of the season on a strike just 1:39 into the contest. Wheaton would even the score as Anna Seabolt found the back of the net for the Thunder (14-0-1) in the 21st minute off assists from Val Lelle and Jaime Orewiler. The two teams would remained deadlocked to take a 1-1 tie into halftime.
The Thunder struck quickly in the second half when Keri Shannon headed home the eventual game winning goal just five minutes into the half. Wheaton tallied on their final score when the Thunder were awarded a penalty kick as North Central committed a hand ball inside the box in the 77th minute of play. Jaime Orewiler drained the kick to give the Thunder their deciding 3-1 lead.
The Thunder outshot the Cardinals by a margin of 24-4. Wheaton goalkeeper Hilary Barreto notched the win for the Thunder playing the final 45 minutes while facing zero shots on goal. North Central goalie
Amy Frazzini made tens saves in the losing effort for the Cardinals.
North Central returns home on Tues. Oct., 17 to take on Lakeland College in a game that was rescheduled from earlier this month. Kickoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
