Sept. 19, 2011 - North Central College senior defensive end Willie Hayes has been selected as the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 1.

Hayes received the distinction on the strength of his performance in the Cardinals' 24-0 victory at Carthage College in the CCIW opener for both teams. Hayes made a season-high seven tackles in the victory, recording two tackles for loss and 1 1/2 quarterback sacks as North Central posted its first shutout victory in two years.

Hayes is in his third season as a starter for North Central and was a First Team All-CCIW and Third Team All-North Region selection last season. He is the third Cardinal to receive Player of the Week honors from the CCIW in 2011. Valente Garza and Caleb Bednarz were named the CCIW's Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively, following North Central's 86-14 victory over Olivet College on Sept. 17.

The Cardinals (3-1, 1-0 CCIW) host Augustana College (0-4, 0-1) on Saturday at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
