Nov. 19, 2011-- The Trine University women's basketball team outlasted North Central College, 57-49 to take home the 2011 Courtyard Chicago Naperville Tip-Off Tournament Saturday night inside Gregory Arena.
After slow starts by both teams, the Thunder took a 27-20 lead into halftime with Haley Killingbeck leading the way with ten points sinking 5 of her 8 shots.
Emily Murphy led all Cardinal scorers with 12 of her 14 points coming in the opening half.
Trine increased their lead to a game high 17 points with 9:42 remaining in the contest. The Cardinals (1-2) would inch their way back closing the deficit to 5 points with 2:23 to go in the game thanks to a trio of three pointers in a four possession span. The comeback effort would stall as the Thunder made some key free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
Murphy was the lone Cardinal in double digits with her 14 points to go along with her team high 7 rebounds.
Emily Collins contributed 7 points on 3 of 6 shooting. Murphy and
Helen Muleya were named to the All-Tournament team for the Cardinals.
Sydney Spragg was the leading scorere for Trine finishing with a game high 15 points. Haley Killingbeck chipped in 12 points for the Thunder. Spragg was selected to the All-Tournament team along with teammate Danielle Senf taking home the Most Valuable Player award for the annual tournament.
North Central travels to Monmouth College Nov. 23 to take on the Fighting Scots with tip-off slated for 7 pm.
