ELMHURST, Ill. (Feb. 10, 2011) - Despite winning five of the 10 weight classes, the North Central College wrestling team was denied in its bid to win a fourth straight College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Championship on Thursday, placing second in this year's event at Elmhurst College.
The Cardinals totaled 89 points, placing a close second to the host Bluejays, who finished with 91. Augustana College placed third with 63.5 points, while Wheaton was fourth with 20.
North Central secured its first individual conference title at 133 pounds, as
Nathan Fitzenreider won a 12-3 major decision over Elmhurst's Jake Denhof in the final. The Cardinals followed with another championship at 141, as
Andrew Zobac beat Augustana's Alberto Quiros, 10-5, in the championship round.
The Cardinals'
Eric Oyster was denied a conference title at 149, losing, 5-3, in overtime to Ryan Earley of Elmhurst. North Central's
Joby Bodi, however, came through with a 8-3 victory over Elmhurst's Mike Grice in the championship match at 157. North Central added another second-place finish at 165, as
Jason Bonham lost a 6-1 decision to Jordan Graham of Augustana.
The Cardinals'
Greg Schroeder, seeded third at 174, came through with a first-place finish. He defeated Augustana's Alex Vavra, 6-1, in the semifinal round, then topped the No. 1 seed, Frank Savegnago of Elmhurst, 5-3, in the final.
North Central's fifth and final conference title came at 197, as
Andrew Bradley pinned Wheaton's Rocky Gingg in the semifinals before edging out Elmhurst's Danny Vargas, 5-4, in the championship match.
Fitzenreider, Zobac and Schroeder each won their second individual conference title.
The Cardinals host Wheaton in a dual meet on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at Gregory Arena. Action is scheduled to get under way at 7 p.m.
