Feb. 8, 2011-- North Central College enjoyed its best shooting night of the season on Tuesday inside Gregory Arena, downing North Park University, 73-57, in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin women's basketball game.
Christine Karl was one of four Cardinals to end the night in double figures, pouring on a season-high 20 points.
North Central (7-14, 3-7 CCIW) torched the nets in the opening 20 minutes of play, taking a 13-point lead into the halftime intermission after shooting 60.9 percent (14-for-23) from the floor. The Cardinals used a late run to turn a five-point advantage into a 14-point bulge, mounting an 11-2 run over a four minute span as the home side went into the break with a 37-24 edge. Four different Cardinals scored baskets during the run with
Jenny Swanson kickstarting the spurt, canning a three-pointer with 4:29 remaining.
The Cardinals held a double digit advantage the entire second half of play. North Park's (8-14, 2-9 CCIW) Theresa Tynski hit a three pointer with 6:21 remaining to pull the visiting Vikings to within 10, prompting a North Central timeout. The Cardinals came out of the timeout swinging, posting the next seven points, swelling the advantage back up to a game-high 17 with just over four minutes remaining en route to the 16-point win.
The Cardinals ended the game shooting a season-high 51 percent (25-for-49) from the floor while sinking 95.2 percent (20-for-21) of their free throws.
Karl led the Cardinals with a season-high 20 points, shooting seven-for-eight from the field and dishing out five assists.
Jackie Errico added 16 points and seven rebounds while Swanson and
Sophie Newson had 11 and 10 points, respectively. Swanson additionally tallied four steals.
Roxanne Jones paced North Park with 19 points and a game-high 11 rebounds while Sarah Peterson added 15 points.
The victory secured a season sweep of the Vikings for the Cardinals, downing North Park 75-73 in overtime on Jan. 11. North Central has now won three straight in the series and seven of the last eight.
The Cardinals continue their homestand on Saturday, Feb. 12, facing Carthage College at 5 p.m. inside Gregory Arena.
