Apr. 20, 2011 - After losses to Fontbonne University in each of the past two seasons, the North Central College women's lacrosse team exacted some revenge on the Griffins on Wednesday, as the Cardinals scored the final three goals to pull away for a 9-5 victory at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
North Central improved to 6-6 overall and 4-3 in Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference play with the victory, keeping the Cardinals in the hunt for a bid to the inaugural MWLC Tournament.
The Cardinals got on the board first with Danielle Fiala's free-position goal with 23:21 on the first-half clock. Fontbonne (5-10, 3-3 MWLC) scored twice in the next five minutes to take a 2-1 lead, but Caroline Gully found the back of the net to tie the score with 18:03 left in the opening period.
The Griffins took the lead once again on a goal with 11:42 left in the half, but North Central responded with a run of four straight scores, bookended by goals from Jacqui Morgan, to establish a 6-3 advantage. Fontbonne was able to tack on one final score before time ran out and went into halftime trailing, 6-4.
Neither team scored again until nearly 10 minutes had elapsed in the second half, as Fontbonne's Mary Alice Pierce scored her second goal to narrow the gap to 6-5. The Cardinals, however, turned up the pressure on defense and shut the Griffins' attack down the rest of the way. Gully scored with 13:34 to play, and Fiala and Amy Frazzini each scored in the final 1:30 to seal the win.
Frazzini also recorded a game-high five draw controls. Alison Musur caused three turnovers and collected four ground balls, sharing the team lead with Gully and Fiala.
North Central closes out the regular season on Wednesday, Apr. 27, traveling to Carthage College for a non-conference game at 5:30 p.m.
