Apr. 21, 2011 - The North Central College baseball team opened its annual series with Wheaton College on a positive note on Thursday, quickly negating an early deficit and defeating the Thunder, 4-2, at Zimmerman Stadium.
The Cardinals (15-7, 9-3 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) won their fourth consecutive contest and added a victory to the three straight wins North Central recorded over Wheaton last season.
The Thunder got both of its runs in the first inning, rapping out three singles. North Central responded with a run of its own in the home half of the first on a double by Joe Turek. The Cardinals took the lead in the second on a two-run triple by Matt Burke, then padded their lead with a run in the fifth after Burke led off with a double and scored on an infield single by Michael Corrigan.
North Central pitcher Nate Arenson shut Wheaton out for the final eight innings, scattering eight hits in improving to 3-1 and finishing off his second complete game of the season. Burke and Turek each went 2 for 2 at the plate and Dan Scott recorded his 19th career sacrifice hit, tying the North Central career record.
Shortstop Ryan Miller went 3 for 4 at the plate for the Thunder (12-18, 4-9 CCIW).
Wheaton will return to Zimmerman Stadium on Saturday for a double header, beginning at noon.
