KENOSHA, Wis. (Apr. 28, 2011) - The North Central College women's lacrosse team will enter the inaugural Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference Tournament on a two-game winning streak after closing out the regular season by defeating Carthage College, 14-11, in a non-conference game at Art Keller Field.
The Cardinals (7-6) avenged a 12-10 loss to the Lady Reds in MWLC play on Apr. 6 and assured themselves of at least a .500 record for the first time in the program's three-year history.
North Central scored three of the game's first four goals, though the Lady Reds (8-8) dominated the middle portion of the opening half and tied the score at 4-4 with 12:43 left on the clock. The Cardinals shut Carthage's attack down for the rest of the period, getting goals from Danielle Fiala and Caroline Gully to take a 6-4 lead into halftime.
The hosts scored in the first minute of play in the second half, though North Central quickly answered with scores from Fiala and Jacqui Morgan. The teams traded goals back and forth for the majority of the second period before consecutive goals by Gully and Morgan put the game out of reach in the final few minutes.
Gully led all scorers with five goals and also turned in a game-high seven draw controls, while Fiala scored four goals and Morgan and Mallory Bahr each scored twice. Goalkeeper Sarah Hon saved eight shots on goal.
The Cardinals travel to Adrian College on Friday for the MWLC Tournament. North Central will play the top-seeded Bulldogs in the semifinal round at 6:30 p.m. Eastern time. The championship game will be played on Saturday at 1 p.m. Eastern time.
