Box Score

Apr. 6, 2011 -
A lengthy second-half scoring drought wound up proving costly for the North Central College women's lacrosse team on Wednesday, as the Cardinals lost, 12-10, to Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference rival Carthage College at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.

The Cardinals (3-4, 1-2 MWLC) were held scoreless for the final 15 minutes of the contest, as Carthage was able to keep the ball away from the hosts after taking a slim lead.

North Central owned a 3-1 lead after four minutes of play, but the Lady Reds' Anna Schweiss scored twice to tie the game and Carthage pulled ahead, 4-3, on Mary Handrahan's goal with 14:41 on the first-half clock. Caroline Gully's score with 11:01 left tied the contest once again before Carthage's Desirae Murphy tallied two straight goal in a span of 1:27 to put the visitors ahead, 6-4.

The Cardinals responded with three goals in a four-minute stretch to take a 7-6 lead just before halftime, but Carthage got a goal from Hannah Sopeth with just six seconds left to send the contest into the break tied at 7-7.

Sopeth also scored the first two goals of the second period, and Carthage owned a 10-8 advantage before Danielle Fiala found the net and Shannon Prince charged down the middle of the field for a game-tying score with 15:42 left.

Carthage, however, pulled ahead for good just 40 seconds later and added a free-position goal with 9:19 to play, managing to fend off the Cardinals' attempts at a final comeback.

Fiala's three goals led North Central's scoring efforts, while Sopeth and Schweiss each scored three times for the Lady Reds (5-5, 4-1 MWLC).

The Cardinals travel to face MWLC foe Trine University (Ind.) on Saturday at 4 p.m. Eastern time.
