BELOIT, Wis. (May 10, 2011) - The North Central College baseball team made an early bid to snap out of a five-game losing streak on Tuesday, but was held scoreless down the stretch as the Cardinals were defeated, 5-3, by Beloit College at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium.
North Central (20-15) jumped in front in the first inning, as Matt Burke and Matt Abraham reached with singles before Michael Corrigan smacked his fifth home run of the season over the center-field fence. The Cardinals held their 3-0 advantage until the fifth inning, when a trio of singles yielded the Buccaneers' first run.
Beloit (24-10) followed with three more runs in the sixth, two of which came after the second out of the inning, then made use of two walks and a hit batter to add another run in the seventh.
The Cardinals staged a two-out rally and threatened to score in the eighth, as Corrigan walked and Kevin Hennessy and Brennan Hagensee singled, but Beloit pitcher Aaron Bushur got a ground ball to get out of the inning.
North Central opens play in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Tournament at Illinois Wesleyan University's Jack Horenberger Field on Thursday. The Cardinals, seeded fourth in the tournament, face the No. 1-seeded hosts at 3 p.m.
