CHICAGO (May 3, 2011) - A late rally in the second game of Tuesday's double header at the University of Chicago nearly secured a sweep for the North Central College baseball team, but the Cardinals came up a run short and settled for a sweep at J. Kyle Anderson Field.
North Central (20-10) won in a 6-0 shutout in the opener before the Maroons bounced back and claimed a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.
Cardinal pitcher Travis Vanderwall limited Chicago (15-11) to three hits and pitched his first collegiate complete game in improving to 3-1 on the season in the day's first game. North Central jumped ahead with three runs in the second inning, as Tom Ross hit a two-run single and later scored on a wild pitch.
RBI singles by Michael Corrigan and Brennan Hagensee extended the Cardinals' advantage to 5-0 in the third inning, and Dan Scott scored North Central's final run in the sixth, getting hit by a pitch and advancing around the horn on a series of three wild pitches.
Hagensee went 2 for 3 at the plate, while Corrigan was 2 for 4.
The Maroons were able to establish a 4-0 lead and hold North Central scoreless until the seventh inning, before the Cardinals rallied and nearly took the lead. The visitors got started with a single by Matt Burke and a double by Corrigan before Joe Turek's base hit broke up the shutout. Hagensee added an RBI single before Chicago made a pitching change and recorded a pair of outs. Pinch runner Andrew Highland scored on a wild pitch to narrow the gap to 4-3, but the inning ended with two runners on base.
Hagensee went 3 for 4 in the game, and Burke and Dan Scott each went 2 for 4. TJ Hecimovich pitched the first 5 2/3 innings and took the loss (1-1), allowing four earned runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking one.
North Central plays a single at Benedictine University on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
