WHEATON, Ill. (Jan. 14, 2012)-- North Central College turnovers turned into 33 points for host Wheaton College as the Thunder led wire-to-wire en route to a, 70-48, victory on Saturday in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin women's basketball game inside King Arena.
The Cardinals (6-9, 0-4 CCIW) spotted the Thunder (9-6, 2-2 CCIW) the game's first five points as Lindsey Brenneman sunk a three and a jumper. A
Sophie Newson trey with 10:10 remaining in the opening half cut the deficit to just four points before Wheaton mounted a 10-2 run to take a 26-14 advantage with just over six minutes to go.
North Central chipped away and cut the lead to just six with 1:40 remaining as the Thunder took an eight-point, 30-22, lead into the locker room at half.
The Cardinals scored the first seven points of the second half, closing within one with 18:39 left off a Newson three-pointer. Newson opened the half with a jumper while an
Emily Murphy block on the defensive end set up an
Emily Collins layup.
Wheaton responded over the next four minutes, burying three shots from beyond the arc to take a 39-30 lead. The Thunder continued to apply the heat using an 11-0 run to bump a 10-point edge into a 21-point cushion with 7:34 remaining.
Newson, Murphy and Collins all ended with a team-high eight points for the Cardinals. Collins additionally grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Four Thunder players ended in double figures with Elisabeth Potts tallying a game-high 18 points. Brooke Olson added 14 while Laura Karsten and Brenneman had 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday, hosting Illinois Wesleyan University at 7:30 p.m. inside Gregory Arena.
