SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (Jan. 7, 2012)-- Wrestling against some of the best competition in NCAA Division III, the North Central College wrestling team fell in a pair of dual matches Saturday at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals inside the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield, Ill.
In their opening dual, the Cardinals were no match for No. 1 Wartburg College falling by a score of, 36-4. At 125 pounds, junior
Nathan Fitzenreider was the lone victorious Cardinal, defeating No. 3 ranked Kenneth Anderson by major decision, 10-1.
Later in the afternoon, No. 16 University of Dubuque outlasted the Cardinals winning by a 21-14 margin. North Central jumped out to an early 11 point lead as
Brayan Gonzalez defeated Christopher Sokol in the opening match, 8-3, at 125 pounds. Fitzenreider, wrestling at 133 pounds, easily handled Marcus Rivera-Ingalls, 8-0, winning by major decision while teammate
Andrew Zobac took care of Brian Travis, 13-5. The Spartans would be too much to handle down the stretch as they slowly surpassed the North Central lead, eliminating the Cardinals from the tournament.
North Central is back on the mat Thursday, Jan. 12 as they host College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin foe Augustana College at 7 pm.
