Oct. 10, 2012 – The North Central College men's soccer team battled College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin foe Wheaton College to a 4-3 double overtime loss, Wednesday night inside Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
Despite trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Cardinals bounced back to tie the contest at 3-3 with under ten minutes remaining in regulation forcing overtime, but Wheaton responded scoring with just under two minutes left in the second overtime period.
The Thunder (9-3-2, 2-0-1 CCIW) got on the board first in the 20
th minute as Adam Blackman found Marshall Hollingsworth who slid one past North Central goalkeeper
John McWard, giving Wheaton the early 1-0 advantage.
In the 40
th minute, Wheaton's Noah Anthony ripped a laser from 25 yards out, finding the back of the twine in the upper right corner, increasing the Thunder lead to 2-0 heading into the intermission.
The Cardinals (8-5-0, 1-2-0 CCIW) cut the lead in half early in the second period as
Michael Lenzi connected on a corner kick from
Charlie Stanke in the 47
th minute.
Adam Blackman would counter for the Thunder in the 66
th minute, scoring an unassisted goal to increase the Wheaton lead back to two.
Less than two minutes later,
Joey Faleni decreased the Wheaton deficit back to one, scoring his second goal of the season on a corner kick from Stanke.
After a Wheaton red card in the 76
th minute caused the Thunder to play a man down the remainder of the contest, the Cardinals
Jake Muszczynski knotted the score at 3-3 less than two minutes later, his team leading 10
th goal of the season.
With under two minutes left in the second overtime, Wheaton took advantage of a Cardinal turnover as Stephen Golz nailed home the game winner, giving the visiting Thunder the 4-3 victory.
John McWard saved seven shots in the losing effort while Thunder goalkeeper Ryan Seager stopped four shots in the victory.
North Central returns to Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 13 against CCIW opponent Carthage College beginning at 7 p.m.
