LISLE, Ill. (Nov. 24, 2012)—Taking the short trip down the road to Benedictine University, the North Central College women's basketball team set the program's single-game scoring record with a, 96-91, victory at the Rice Center.
The Cardinals (2-2) broke the previous mark of 93 points, set in a 2004 victory over Benedictine. North Central was 17-60 from three, shattering the previous records for three-pointers made (12) and three-pointers attempted (27).
The host Eagles (0-4) led through a majority of the first half, taking its largest lead with 11:14 remaining, as a Michelle Batty lay-up increased the Eagle lead, 25-18.
With 2:58 left to play in the opening half,
Amanda Hoye sunk a three-pointer to knot the score at, 34-34, before
Michelle Todd nailed one from beyond the arch, giving the Cardinals a three-point lead with just over a minute left until halftime.
The Eagles' Nicole Botich layed one in with three seconds remaining before half, giving the hosts a, 40-39, lead at the intermission.
In the second half, Benedictine led for the opening 15-plus minutes, including a ten-point lead with just over eight minutes remaining in the contest.
The Cardinal comeback attempt began after
Kelsey Cooling and
Amanda Hoye put home a pair of three-pointers, narrowing the Eagle lead, 74-72, with 6:56 left to play.
A lay-up by
Larynn Shumaker gave North Central its first lead of the second period, 82-80, at the 4:26 mark.
The Cardinals would not surrender the lead back to the Eagles, as
Bobbi Johns would nail four free throws down the stretch, giving North Central the, 96-91, victory.
Jenny Swanson led the Cardinals with 17 points, going 5-9 from beyond the arch.
Maryssa Cladis added 14 points while grabbing eight rebounds on the afternoon.
North Central is back in action on Nov. 27, travelling to Pella, Iowa to take on Central College. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
