Dec. 8, 2012 – Playing host to the 49
th Annual North Central College Invitational, the Cardinal wrestling squad posted seven top-six individual placeholders, while posting a fourth-place finish out of the ten team field, Saturday inside Gregory Arena.
The Cardinals accumulated 80 total team points finishing behind team champion No. 11 Wabash College (140) while College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) foe No. 19 Augustana College (134.5) finished a close second and No. 9 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (102) rounded out the top-three.
Nathan Fitzenreider, ranked first nationally at 141 pounds, took home North Central's lone individual championship at 141 pounds. After an opening round bye, Fitzenreider made easy work of the College of Mount St. Joseph's Luis Godines, recording a first round pin at the 2:44 mark before downing Garrett Whitehead of UW-Whitewater by major decision, 11-1.
In the semi-finals, Fitzenreider defeated Augustana's Hector Ruiz by decision, 5-0, before recording an early escape and hanging on for the 1-0 decision in the championship match over UW-Whitewater's Jake Fredericksen, ranked seventh at 141.
The Cardinals also received a third-place finish from
Casey Greenberg at 197 pounds. After defeating James Kuczynski of Milwaukee School of Engineering by decision, 8-4, in the opening round, Greenberg would be outdone at the hands of Mount St. Joseph's Nathan Islamovsky falling in a time of 3:29.
In the consolation bracket, Greenberg cruised past Concordia University Wisconsin's Seth Kilkelly by major decision, 9-1, before sneaking past Augustana's Matt Regnier by decision, 2-0. In the semi-finals of the consolation bracket, Greenberg made quick work of Lakeland College's Jeremy Kroeger by major decision, 18-4, before defeating Justin Meineke of Mount St. Joseph in the third-place match by major decision, 12-4.
North Central also received a fourth-place finish from
Blake Olson at 157 pounds, fifth-place finishes from
Nick Santos (125 pounds) and Steven Burling (174 pounds), as well as sixth-place finishes from
Jon Williamson (133 pounds) and
Dylan Mahler (285 pounds).
The Cardinals are back on the mat on Dec. 16, travelling to Ft. Myers, Fla. for the Florida Gulf Coast Duals hosted by Concordia University Wisconsin. Opening matches are slated to begin at 9 a.m. (ET).
