DECATUR, Ill. (April 21, 2012)—The North Central College baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep against College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) rival Millikin University on Saturday at Sunnyside Park.
After a five run ninth inning, the North Central was able to secure game one by a 10-4 margin before tallying a five run eighth inning in game two, to propel the Cardinals (17-11, 8-6 CCIW) to a 13-10 victory.
In the opener the Big Blue (8-22, 3-11 CCIW) jumped out to an early 1-0 first inning lead before a pair of RBI singles by
Steve Hlavac in the third and fifth innings, respectively, gave the Cardinals the 2-1 lead.
Jared Dosien's two-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth put Millikin ahead once again but a
Tom Ross RBI single in the top half of the seventh, knotted the score at 3-3.
North Central broke open the deadlock the next inning as
Joe Turek plated a run on his sixth double of the season and
Zac Pacanowski drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to center field, giving the Cardinals a 5-3 advantage.
Millikin would add a run in the bottom of the eight but RBI singles by Hlavac, Turek, and Pacanowski in the ninth, secured the 10-4 victory for the visitors.
Six Cardinal starters had multiple hits in game one including 3 for 5 efforts from Hlavac and Nick Hammerl.
Kris Singh was the pitcher of record for North Central giving up twp earned runs over 7 2/3 innings while striking out four, to improve to 4-2 on the season.
In the nightcap the Cardinals were able to score first, taking the 1-0 lead on an RBI double from
Steve Hlavac.
The Big Blue responded with a run in the second and two runs in the third, giving the hosts a 3-1 advantage.
North Central answered in the top of the fourth scoring two runs to even the game at 3-3. Nick Hammerl roped an RBI single before a bases loaded walk by
Tom Ross to begin the rally, as the Cardinals scored in each of the final six innings of play.
After Millikin took the lead yet again in the bottom of the fourth, North Central plated a pair of runs in the fifth and a run in each of the sixth and seventh innings, to tie the score once more 7-7.
The Cardinals would put the lead out of reach in the eighth plating five runs on three hits. Hlavac got the scoring started with a sacrifice fly to center before an RBI single by Turek and two-out, three-run homerun by
Sam Klein gave the Cardinals a decisive 12-7 advantage.
Pacanowski led all Cardinal hitters in game two going 3 for 4 while Klein was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI.
Keeler Otero receives his first victory of the season pitching 2 2/3 innings in relief.
Tyler Herman notched his fourth and fifth saves this season, moving the senior into sole possession of second place in program history with 11 career saves.
North Central looks to complete the season sweep of Millikin on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 1 pm.
