ELMHURST, Ill. (Jan. 2, 2013) – Opening up College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) play, the North Central College women's basketball team was outdone at the hands of Elmhurst College, 97-90, Wednesday night at R.A. Faganel Hall.
The Bluejays (7-5, 1-0 CCIW) came out firing on all cylinders, jumping out to an early double-digit advantage 12-2 at the 17:00 mark in the opening half.
The Cardinals (7-5, 0-1 CCIW) would bounce back, stifling the Elmhurst offense with a 15-4 run as
Callie Rezin capped off the scoring run with a three-pointer, giving North Central a 17-16 lead mid-way through the first half.
Over the last five minutes of the half, Elmhurst outscored the Cardinals by a 21-9 margin to take a 53-41 lead into the intermission, led by Fiona McMahon's 24 first half points.
The host Bluejays started the second half with a 15-5 run just four minutes into the period, opening up its largest lead of the contest at 68-46.
The Cardinals slowly crept back into the contest, drawing within four points of the Elmhurst lead at the 7:11 mark as
Kelsey Cooling knocked down a three-pointer, narrowing the Bluejay lead 81-77, but North Central was unable to overtake the lead falling by a seven point spread.
Larynn Shumaker paced North Central with 19 points and six rebounds while
Emily Murphy chipped in 12 points.
McMahon led all scorers with 36 points and 16 rebounds while teammate Tess Goddard added 22 points for the Bluejays.
North Central returns home to Gregory Arena on Saturday, Jan. 5 to take on CCIW foe Wheaton College at 5 p.m.
