ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (Apr. 16, 2013) - A war for first place in the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) standings was waged until the final seconds Tuesday evening, as the North Central College women's lacrosse team negated a late deficit before a late goal condemned the Cardinals to a 9-8 loss to Augustana College at Thorson-Lucken Field.

Trailing, 8-6, with nine minutes remaining, North Central (8-4, 5-1 MWLC) slashed the deficit in half when Rebecca James caused a turnover and Bianca Perri scored on a free-position shot. The Vikings won the ensuing draw control, but the Cardinals forced another turnover and got a game-tying goal from Jacqui Morgan with 4:49 on the clock.

North Central had three opportunities to attempt a go-ahead score, but each possession resulted in a turnover. The Vikings (11-3, 6-0) cleared the ball for the final time with under a minute to play and got the game-winner from Kendall Maduro with just nine seconds to play.

Morgan finished with three goals for the Cardinals, while Leea LoPresti scored twice. Gina Fisher collected six ground balls, giving her a North Central-record 61 for the season, and Rachael Houp caused a team-high four turnovers.

The Cardinals open a four-game homestand to close the regular season on Saturday, hosting the University of Dubuque in non-conference action. Play is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Live video and in-game statistics can be accessed at northcentralcardinals.com/schedule.aspx?path=wlax.
