AURORA, Ill. (Apr. 2, 2013) - The North Central College women's lacrosse team returned from a week-long layoff from competition and extended its winning streak to four games on Tuesday, taking control early in a 15-5 win in the Cardinals' inaugural matchup with Aurora University at Vago Field.
The Cardinals (4-2, 3-0 Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference) built a first-half lead by holding Aurora scoreless for the first 10 minutes of play. North Central broke the ice after three minutes had elapsed, as
Jacqui Morgan converted a free-position attempt, and the Cardinals doubled their lead on
Mallory Bahr's goal just 35 seconds later.
North Central owned a 4-0 lead before the Spartans (1-8, 1-3 MWLC) got on the board with a pair of goals.
Claire Norfleet scored and assisted
Bianca Perri on a goal in a 28-second span to spark a five-goal rally which extended the lead to 9-2 with 4:01 left in the half, and the Cardinals carried a 10-3 advantage into the break.
After yielding the second period's first goal, the Cardinals netted the next three scores to put the game away. North Central out-shot the Spartans, 29-16.
Morgan and
Gina Fisher led the Cardinals with three goals apiece, and Fisher, Norfleet and
Danielle Fiala each finished with two assists. Fisher also totaled 10 ground balls, the third-highest single game total in school history, and caused four turnovers to push her season total to 21, which ties North Central's single-season record after just six games.
The Cardinals travel to face Otterbein College (Ohio) in a non-conference game on Saturday at 5 p.m. Eastern time.
