SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (Apr. 24, 2013) – In a game of scoring runs, The North Central College baseball team took advantage of a seven-run second inning and led by as many as ten-runs, hung on for a 13-12 victory Wednesday night inside Boomer Stadium over non-conference foe Dominican University.
The Stars (10-23) took an early 3-0 lead after the first inning, but North Central responded with 13 straight runs over the next five innings.
In the top of the second, the Cardinals (14-15) plated seven runs on five hits as the first three batters reached base safely before
Nick Daniels drove home a pair with a double to right center field, narrowing the Dominican lead 3-2.
Later in the inning,
Sam Klein drove an RBI-single through the right side to put the Cardinals on top 4-3.
Vito DeRango drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to center field before Klein came around to score on a failed pick off attempt, and
John Ciolkosz capped off the inning with an RBI-single to right, giving the Cardinals a 7-3 lead.
The Cardinals added two runs in each of the next to innings and two more in the sixth to take a 13-3 lead after six complete.
Dominican rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh and two more in the eighth, cutting its deficit 13-10 but the Cardinal lead would prove too much as
Brendan Ryan came in to earn his sixth save of the season, despite giving up a pair of ninth inning runs.
Four Cardinals finished with multiple hits while Daniels led the way going 2-for-4 from the plate with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.
North Central hosts Millikin University on Saturday, Apr. 27 with the first game of the doubleheader scheduled for 12 p.m. at Zimmerman Stadium.
