Apr. 27, 2013 – Backed by a pair of stellar pitching performances from
Jon Rashid and
Kris Singh, the North Central College baseball team claimed both games of the doubleheader over Millikin University, 5-0 in game one followed by an 11-1 victory in the nightcap.
In game one, Rashid scattered six hits over eight scoreless innings walking just one batter to earn his fourth win of the season.
Connor Brown followed with a scoreless ninth in relief.
The Cardinals (16-15, 8-9 CCIW) gave Rashid four early runs in the bottom of the first as
Vito DeRango and
Frank Sutphin each reached on base hits to open the inning.
Kevin Hennessy reached on a fielder's choice scoring DeRango before
Matt Brancato lined an RBI-double down the left field line to give North Central a 2-0 lead.
Later in the inning, Zac Pacanowksi plated
John Ciolkosz on a sacrifice fly to center field followed by a
Nick Daniels single up the middle scoring Brancato to put the Cardinals on top 4-0.
North Central added an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth to take a decisive 5-0 lead.
DeRango led all batter going 3-for-4 from the plate with a run scored while Brancato finished game one with a 2-for-4 performance.
In the nightcap, the Cardinals jumped on Big Blue (7-20, 1-15 CCIW) starter Evan West for eight runs over the first 3 1/3 innings including RBI-base hits by Hennessy, Ciolkosz and Pacanowski.
The Cardinals added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth as Sutphin line a run scoring single to right center before
Kevin Hennessy launched his team-leading fourth homerun of the season, a three-run shot over the left field fence.
Cardinal Starter
Kris Singh went the distance in the seven inning shortened game, giving up just one earned run and striking out a pair.
Hennessy was 4-for-4 in game two with five RBI and two runs scored. DeRango added three hits while Sutphin went 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
North Central hosts Millikin on Senior Day in the series finale tomorrow at Zimmerman Stadium. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
