Apr. 30, 2013 – The North Central College baseball team found itself on the wrong end of both games in a pair of non-conference, seven-inning contests Tuesday afternoon, losing the opener 10-8 before suffering a 3-0 setback in game two against the University of Chicago.
The Cardinals (16-18) scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first as
Vito DeRango came around to score on a throwing error after reaching base via single to lead off the inning, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.
The Maroons (20-11) countered with three runs in the top of the second, connecting on five of its 19 total hits in game one.
The Chicago lead did not last long as North Central responded with four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-3 lead.
Kevin Hennessy started the scoring lining an RBI-single to right center before
John Ciolkosz plated a run on his team leading 12
th double of the season. Two batters later,
Zac Pacanowski plated the pair on a 2-RBI double to deep right field.
In the top of the fourth the Maroons plated three runs, two of which came via wild pitch, followed by a run in the sixth and three more in the top of the seventh to take a 10-5 lead.
North Central rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh including a two-run homerun off the bat of
Joe Paparone, but Chicago's William Katza came in to record the final out, earning his second save of the season.
DeRango led all Cardinal batters going 3-for-4 from the plate with two runs scored. Pacanowski and Paparone each drove in a pair in the loss.
In the nightcap, the Maroons scored three runs in the top of the first inning on a J.R. Lopez bases clearing double to deep left center field, and that was all the scoring to be had.
Andrew VanWazer tossed a complete game shutout for the Maroons, scattering eight hits over seven innings of work with four strikeouts.
Matt Brancato was 2-for-2 from the dish with a walk in game two, while DeRango and
Bobby Norell each had a pair of hits.
North Central closes out College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) play May. 3 and 4, hosting Elmhurst College on Friday at 3 p.m. before travelling to Elmhurst, Ill. on Saturday with game one of the twin bill slated for 12 p.m.
