Jan. 4, 2014 – Opening up College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) play Saturday at Gregory Arena, the North Central College women's basketball team was ousted at the hands of North Park University, 92-71.
North Central (7-5, 0-1 CCIW) trailed nearly the entire contest as the offense struggled to find its stride shooting just 27 percent from the field.
The Cardinals trailed by as many as 18 in the first half, but hung around and trailed by only three with 9:17 left on the second half clock.
Over the next four minutes the Viking offense lit fire, going on a 21-4 run and taking advantage of six North Central turnovers in the process to take a decisive 86-66 lead with just under five minutes remaining.
North Central forced 40 turnovers on the evening but was unable to capitalize, connecting on just 20 of 74 shooting. North Park (8-4, 1-0 CCIW) finished the evening shooting 51 percent from the field on 37 of 73 shooting.
Larynn Shumaker was the lone Cardinal in double-figures, leading all scorers with 24 points on 7 of 10 shooting from the field and 10 of 12 from the free-throw line.
Five Vikings eclipsed double-digits, paced by Brittany Pittas' 19 points. Rachel Torres added 14 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and six steals for North Park.
North Central continues conference play Wednesday, Jan. 8, travelling to Millikin University. Tip-off at the Griswold Center is slated for 7 pm.
