Oct. 25, 2014 - The North Central College men's soccer team saw a tough Wheaton College team on Saturday night and lost against the conference foe 5-1. The Cardinals (9-6-1) had a very difficult time on both sides of the field against the No. 10 Thunder (14-3). The visiting Thunder got off to a fast start with a goal in the third minute from senior defenseman Noah Anthony. Wheaton converted from an advantageous spot on the field after a foul placed the ball in front of the box. This put the Thunder up 1-0 against the Cardinals early on. The Thunder would display their offensive firepower and go on to score two more times throughout the first period. Forward Jordan Golz would get a goal of his own in the 19th minute and it was followed ten minutes later in the 29th minute with Anthony scoring his second goal of the game.
The second period played out in a similar fashion as the first period in which the Cardinals struggled to get much going. North Central saw the Thunder score again in the 54th minute when forward Stephen Golz shot the ball right past the goalie and they went up 4-0.
The Cardinals did manage to get something working when forward
Chandler Olah (4) maneuvered through the defense to rocket a shot past the Thunder goalie in the 75th minute. Senior
Lucas Habeeb (6) set Olah up perfectly with a very well-timed pass to give Habeeb his sixth assist of the season. This shot brought the Cardinals score up one to make it 4-1.
The Thunder would score one more time late in the 89th minute when forward Cannon Allen snuck one in. The Thunder would finish out the match and the final score for the game would be 5-1.
The Cardinals played extremely aggressive and they gave it a valiant effort against a very potent Thunder offense. The Cardinals were not able to find too many holes in the Thunder defense and were able to get five shots up for the game with three on-goal. The Cardinals continue play on Oct. 29 when they host Millikin University (6-7-1) at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Live in game statistics and video can be accesed by clicking HERE.
