The North Central College women's soccer team came back to snatch a huge win in overtime as forward Emily Gaither knocked in the game winning goal to end it, 2-1, against the Carthage College Lady Reds in the first College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) matchup of the season.During the first half, the Cardinals (4-2-2, CCIW 1-0) and the Lady Reds (4-7-0, CCIW 0-1) both struggled to find the net as neither team was able to put a point on the board.
Entering the second half with no score, Gaither took her first shot of the game and scored her first goal in the 47
th minute to put the Cardinals in the lead, 1-0.
The Lady Reds got momentum back and answered with a goal of their own in the 54
th minute, tying it up.
For the rest of the second half,
Caitlyn Orawiec,
Nicholette Fulk and
Morgan Geiser would put shot on gaols, but come up short in regaining the Cardinals lead.
As overtime started, North Central started off strong with possession of the ball the majority of the time. Orawiec took her chance to sneak one in the net, but came up empty. It was in the 97
th minute that Gaither found an opening and shot in the game winning goal, her second of the game, fifth of the season for the 2-1 final.
North Central will be in action again on Wednesday at home to take on the University of Dubuque with game time set for 5 p.m.
