Dec. 19, 2014 – Powered by a strong second half, the North Central College women's basketball team extended its record setting start to the season to 10 games on Friday with a 110-93 victory over Dubuque University in the Cardinals final non-conference home game.
Â
North Central's win streak now sits at 10 games to begin the season as the Cardinals battled back from a 51-50 deficit at halftime. Dubuque hung in over the first 20 minutes of play due to a blistering 70 percent shooting from three-point range.Â
Â
Trailing 66-62 with 12:48 to play in the contest, the Cardinal offense caught fire over the next 3 and a half minutes while taking advantage on a tired Spartan team, going on a 20-2 run to quickly turn a four-point deficit into a 14-point lead. The pivotal run was highlighted by
Corrine Rowe's four-point play following her own lay-in the previous possession, knocking down a three-pointer while getting fouled in the process.Â
Â
After Rowe nailed the free-throw following her long ball,
Emily Zgoda connected on one of her two three-pointers during the Cardinal run, while
Tess Godhardt capped it off with an easy bucket down low following a
Maryssa Cladis steal and assist.
Â
The Spartans (4-4) drew to within eight points of the Cardinal lead with just over seven minutes to play, but Cladis quickly negated the Dubuque momentum with a three-pointer on the following possession and the Cardinals held a double-figure lead the remainder of the game, at one point leading by as many as 20 down the stretch.
Â
North Central dominated on the offensive glass, holding a 40-18 advantage while holding the Spartans to just 25 percent shooting from three in the second half.
Â
Godhardt paced the Cardinal scoring attack with a 23-point, 13-rebound double-double, while Zgoda finished with 15 points on 5 of 8 shooting from three and Cladis added 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists off the bench.Â
Jamie Cuny finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and a game-high five blocked shots.
Â
Jenna Kotas finished with a game-high 24 points and 14 boards for the Spartans, while Meggie Schmidt added 20 points and Abbey Meyer chipped in 13 points and six assists off the bench.
Â
North Cental returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 30, traveling to Eureka College with tip-off slated for 6 p.m. at the Reagan Center. The link to live statistics is available
