Layten Binion won the 133-pound weight class while three other Cardinals placed second as the North Central College wrestling team finished fourth at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Championships at Gregory Arena.
The top-seeded Binion easily dispatched Wheaton College's Greg Manfredi in the opening match. He led 4-1 after the first period and cruised to an 11-2 victory. In the title bout, Binion squared off against 2013 All-American at 125 pounds Miguel Venecia of Elmhurst College. Binion led 2-1 after the first period, and recorded a near fall early in the second frame. Binion continued to dominate and finished off Venecia 9-2.
Nick Santos,
Andrew Rodawold, and
Josh Tardy all finished second for the Cardinals. Santos blew out Wheaton's Tom Foy (15-3) to advance to the title match against Augustana Collge's Jimmy Panozzo. In the championship, neither wrestler could take the other down until Panozzo scored a takedown in the second overtime to win the title, 4-2.Â
Rodawold reached the title match with an upset victory over Elmhust's Jim Spangler. Rodawold scored a takedown midway through the first period to gain control of the match and led 4-1 heading into the third period. After Spangler escaped, Rodawold sealed the victory with another takedown with 18 seconds remaining to win 7-2. Augustana's Isiah Schaub beat Rodawold by technical fall in the final.Â
The sophomore Tardy easily advanced to finals with a 4-1 win over Kevin Sundberg of Augustana, however he was upset 6-3 in the finals by Wheaton's Mark Savenok.Â
Nathan Segal, last season's CCIW Champion at 149 pounds, finished in third place after he beat Wheaton's William Byrd in the third place match 6-2. Leading 3-1 late in the third period, the junior sealed it with a takedown with 23 seconds remaining.Â
Eric Kirkman upset Elmhurst's Mitch Morris 2-1 to add a third place finish, and
Casey Greenberg also placed third after winning by medical forfeit against Hunter Feraco of Augustana.Â
Dylan Mahler capped the Cardinal effort with a pin of Wheaton's Taylor Gohn early in the third period (5:40).
Augustana ran away with the team title after registering 83 points, outscoring the second place Elmhurst by 13.5 points. Wheaton garnered 63 points, while North Central came in just behind with 61.Â
North Central's next competition is the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional on Mar. 1, hosted by Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind.
