WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (Mar. 23, 2014) – The North Central College baseball team used a pair of five run innings late in the game to earn a 12-8 victory over Kalamazoo College, Sunday afternoon at Chain of Lakes Stadium.
Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Cardinals (6-3) put together three hits and took advantage of a Kalamazoo error to plate five runs.
Nick DeWolf led off the inning with a single up the middle, followed by a run scoring triple off the bat of
Joe Paparone, splitting the left center field gap.
Sam Carius followed with an RBI single to center, scoring Paparone from third. Later in the inning,
Zach Jarosz lofted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Carius. North Central continued to put pressure on the Hornet defense as
Sam Klein scored on an error and
Richard Concialdi put the Cardinals ahead 7-4 with a sacrifice fly to center.
The Cardinal lead quickly diminished as the Hornets (1-6) put together four hits and plated four runs in the top of the following inning to take an 8-7 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth.
North Central responded right back with another huge inning of its own, plating five more runs as the Cardinals received RBI base hits from Klein, Jarosz and Paparone as well as a sacrifice fly off the bat of DeWolf.
Jordan Van Dyck tossed the final inning and two-thirds of scoreless ball for North Central to earn the win, striking out a pair.
All nine batters in the Cardinal lineup recorded a hit on the afternoon led by Paparone's 4 of 6 showing from the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Jarosz ended the afternoon 3 of 5 with a pair of RBI, scoring once.
North Central returns to action tomorrow with a pair of games against Colby College in Auburndale, Fla. The first game is slated for 9 am (ET).
