Apr. 9, 2014 – After splitting a weekday doubleheader a little over a week ago, the North Central College baseball team was unable to secure the season series over College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) foe Augustana College, ultimately falling 10-7 Wednesday afternoon at Zimmerman Stadium.
 
North Central found itself down 10-1 after Augustana plated a run in the first, followed by three runs in each of the second, fifth and sixth innings, running Cardinal starting pitcher Andrew Houser after just one inning pitched.  Houser allowed four earned runs on three hits and three walks, starting on just two days rest.
 
The Cardinal offense did not go down quietly, fighting back with a five-run bottom half of the sixth while finally getting to Augustana starter Zach Morgenstern.  The first four batters of the inning reached base, including RBI base hits from Vito DeRango and Sam Carius. 
 
Two batters later, Sam Klein laced a 2 RBI single to left and would advance to second on the throw back to the infield.  After stealing third, Klein would cross the plate on a Zac Pacanowski single, pulling the Cardinals (13-8, 5-4 CCIW) to within four, 10-6.
 
North Central got another run in the bottom of the eighth as Klein doubled to lead off the inning and would come around to score on a wild pitch three batters later, but the deficit proved to be too much for the Cardinal offense as Cooper SantAmour came on to secure the save for the Vikings (15-6, 7-2 CCIW).
 
Klein finished the afternoon 3 for 4 from the plate with three runs scored, two RBI and a stolen base.  Carius also had three hits while scoring a run and driving in another.
 
North Central returns to action Saturday, Apr. 12, hosting Elmhurst College in a conference doubleheader.  First pitch of game one is slated for 12 pm.  Links to live statistics and audio are available HERE.
