(May 2, 2014) -Â The North Central College women's lacrosse team saw the 2014 season come to a close on Friday, as the Cardinals lost by a 16-9 count to the Augustana College Vikings in the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) Tournament semifinals at Thorson-Lucken Field.
North Central (9-6) fell victim to a late first-half flurry which broke open a tied game, then saw the Vikings continue their surge into the early second half as top-seeded Augustana remained unbeaten on the season.
The Cardinals kept pace early, as
Jordyn McFarlane and
Claire Norfleet both scored goals before
Mallory Bahr's successful free-position attempt knotted the score at 3-3 with 4:39 to play in the first half. The hosts, however, scored four times in the final 3:05, including two goals in the last 33 seconds, to take a 7-3 advantage into halftime.Â
Anna Bartels found the back of the net just 33 seconds after play resumed, but the Vikings responded with three goals in a 62-second span to build their lead up to 10-4. North Central was unable to get back into striking distance despite owning a 20-14 advantage in shot attempts in the second half.Â
Bartels scored a team-best three goals for North Central, which also got two assists and seven ground balls from
Gina Fisher and three caused turnovers from
Rachael Houp. Olivia Mayer led Augustana (17-0) with five goals, Hilary Kargl added five assists and Kaylee Nolan totaled eight draw controls.Â
The Cardinals close the 2014 season with school-record single-season totals for goals (220) and draw controls (212).
