Sep. 3, 2014 - North Central College men's cross country runner Troy Kelleher has been selected as the first College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Athlete of the Week for the 2014 season.
Kelleher was named the CCIW's top-performing men's cross country competitor on the strength of his performance in Friday's Elmhurst College Early Bird Invitational, which was the Cardinals' first meet of the season. He won the individual championship, finishing well clear of the field in a time of 18 minutes, 53.1 seconds, which matched the 6,000-meter (3.7-mile) course record set by former teammate John Crain in 2012. Kelleher led North Central to a first-place finish in the team standings as well, as the Cardinals posted just 16 points to finish one shy of a perfect score. North Central runners occupied eight of the top nine individual places in the meet.
An NCAA Division III All-American in cross country in 2013 as well as in the 10,000-meter run at the Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships last spring, Kelleher leads a Cardinal squad currently ranked second nationally and first in the Midwest Region by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
North Central travels to Oakhurst Forest Preserve in Aurora on Friday for the Aurora University Invitational.
