Apr. 10, 2015 -Â Extending its school-record winning streak to a seventh straight game, the North Central College women's lacrosse team quickly negated an early deficit Friday and cut off all potential comeback opportunities down the stretch in a 14-9 victory over Augsburg College (Minnesota) at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
The Cardinals (8-1), who have clinched a winning season for the third straight year, were led once again by the efforts of Gina Fisher, who posted game highs of five goals and eight ground balls and tied her own single-game school record with 10 draw controls.
North Central trailed by a 3-1 count midway through the first half as Auggie goalkeeper Marissa Guillou saved six of the hosts' first seven shots on goal. The Cardinals' Kassie Whaling scored off a pass from Anicia Mattingly with 12:29 on the clock, and North Central followed with a lightning-quick scoring surge consisting of three goals in 26 seconds to take a lead it would not relinquish.
Fisher got the rally started by finding the net with 11:29 on the clock, then controlled the ensuing draw and fed Claire Norfleet for a score with 11:16 left. Fisher controlled the next draw as well and scored 13 seconds later, boosting the Cardinals' lead to 5-3. Whaling, Norfleet and Fisher each scored again in the final 5:40 to send North Central into halftime with a 8-5 lead.
Augsburg (5-7) scored the opening goal of the second half to narrow its deficit to two goals, but the Cardinals countered with scores by Whaling and Jordyn McFarlane and never led by less than three goals the rest of the way. North Central held the Auggies without a shot attempt over the final 10 minutes.
Whaling scored four goals for the Cardinals and added six ground balls, as did Norfleet and Kara Stevens. Delaney Everett paced Augsburg with three goals.
The Cardinals travel to the University of Dubuque for a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) encounter on Saturday, with play set to begin at 1:00 p.m. Â Live video coverage can be accessed by clicking HERE.
