Apr. 25, 2015 -
The North Central College women's lacrosse team was denied in its attempt to close the 2015 regular season with a victory Saturday, as Augustana College knocked off the Cardinals, 14-4, at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.

The Vikings (16-1, 6-0 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin), ranked No. 1 in the most recent NCAA Division III West Region rankings, scored the first four goals of the contest and dominated possession throughout in securing the inaugural CCIW regular-season championship.

North Central (10-4, 4-2) struggled to get any kind of offensive attack going early, as six of its first eight clear attempts were unsuccessful and enduring more than 10 minutes before its first shot attempt. Augustana owned a 4-0 lead before Claire Norfleet scored the Cardinals' initial goal on a free-position shot with 5:09 left in the first half. The visitors scored twice in a 16-second span late in the period and carried a 6-1 advantage into halftime.

The Cardinals were held without a shot attempt for nearly 20 minutes to start the second period as well, during which time Augustana extended its advantage to 11-1. North Central got free-position goals from Kassie Whaling and Gina Fisher as well as a second goal from Norfleet down the stretch but were unable to close the gap any further than nine goals.

Fisher also collected six ground balls, while Norfleet tallied four draw controls and goalkeeper Kat Schultz established a new North Central single-game record with 16 saves.

Hilary Kargl led the Vikings with three goals. Emily Handrahan totaled four assists and Kaylee Nolan compiled 11 draw controls.

North Central travels to face Carthage in the semifinals of the CCIW Tournament on Wednesday. Start times and other information about the tournament can be found at cciw.org.
