KENOSHA, Wis. (Apr. 29, 2015) - The North Central College women's lacrosse team saw the 2015 season come to an end Wednesday, as the Cardinals lost by a 17-7 count to Carthage College in the semifinals of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament.
The Cardinals (10-5) outshot Carthage, 24-22, but the Lady Reds were able to put 20 of their shots on the goal and got 11 saves from First Team All-CCIW goalkeeper Taylor Sopron to advance to Saturday's final.
North Central scored the game's opening goal, as
Kassie Whaling scored off a pass from
Emily Zadny nearly four minutes in, but the Lady Reds (12-5) scored four times in the next eight minutes to pull in front, 4-1, and prompt a Cardinal timeout.
Coming out of the stoppage, the Cardinals got a free-position goal from
Claire Norfleet, but the hosts scored twice in 21 seconds to spark a 6-0 run which lasted the rest of the first half. Carthage led, 10-2, at halftime and was not threatened in the second period.
Whaling and Norfleet scored three goals each for North Central, while
Gina Fisher tallied two assists along with seven draw controls, four caused turnovers and four ground balls. Fisher closes the season with 52 caused turnovers, breaking her own school record of 48 set in 2014.
Rachel Mussell, Madison Griffin, Elizabeth Wittenborg and Mackenzie Day scored four goals each for Carthage.
