Box Score

Oct. 1, 2016 – Opening up College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin play with unfavorable weather conditions, the North Central College women's soccer team defeated Carthage College 1-0 at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Both teams exchanged multiple shots in the first half, with Carthage and North Central both having goals taken away. Halfway through the first, the Lady Reds had a breakaway opportunity but an offside call nullified the goal, keeping the score tied at zero. The Cardinals appeared to have scored late in the half as a penalty kick from Catherine Kent found the back of the net but a referee ruled to have the kick redone, and the Cardinals could not pull off the same outcome. The score would remain at zero for both teams going into the break with North Central owning a 9-4 advantage on shots.

With what looked like a potential third overtime game, the Cardinals had other ideas as Jessica DeJong was able to spin around from 20 yards out and break the tie in the 68th minute. The Cardinals defense took care of the rest as they held the Carthage attack scoreless the rest of the way and logged their second shutout of the season.

North Central (2-5-2, 1-0 CCIW) was outshot 14-11 but logged three more shots on goal. Catherine Kent led the Cardinals with three shots. DeJong, Taylor Markanich, and Nicole Novak each added two shots. DeJong tallied her first goal of the season.

The Cardinals travel to Elmhurst College on Wednesday Oct. 5 with game time at 5 pm. Live stats can be found HERE.
