Rock Island, Ill. (Oct. 12, 2016) – Relying heavily on their defense all game and reaping the benefits, the North Central College women's soccer team emerged the victor against Augustana College, winning 1-0 Wednesday evening at Thorson-Lucken Field.
North Central (4-6-2,3-1 CCIW) came out strong in the first half, with
Jessica DeJong logging a shot on goal in the third minute that was unfortunately blocked. The Cardinals were only able to get one more shot in the half but made the most of it as
Noelia Reyes connected at the 9:44 mark to give North Central the 1-0 lead. Augustana would put up eight shots in the half but the Cardinals defense allowed only two shots on goal which goalkeeper
Nicki Seiton was able to easily take care of.
Augustana (7-5, 1-2 CCIW) would not go silently as they put another six shots up with three being on goal. Meanwhile, the Cardinals were only able to tally one shot the entire second half but let their lock-down defense take control of the game. The defense did just that as they shut out the Vikings the rest of the way and won their third conference game of the season, tying the program record for most conference wins in a season previously set in 1998.
Reyes now has two goals on the season while Seiton has 13 career shutouts, one behind the all-time leader.
The Cardinals receive a week long break in action as they travel to Carroll University next Wednesday, October 19 with game time at 5 pm. Live stats and video can be found
