Box Score
Oct. 19, 2016 – The 2016 season has been one of perseverance for the North Central College men's soccer team, and their 1-0 victory over College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) foe Caroll University at Schneider Stadium on Wednesday night was no better example of this.
Despite taking 19 shots to Carroll's 8, it was not until the 86
th minute the Cardinals would finally secure their hard earned breakthrough, when senior forward
John Kissel would score the game winning goal, with help from senior midfielder
Chandler Olah in the form of an assist.
The Cardinals dominated the majority of the match, with senior defender
Jon Borzick almost giving them an early lead when he shot in the second minute, only for the ball to sail wide of the post, while freshman forward
Alexis Flores looked to continue his scintillating form, barely missing high 5:19 into the half.
Borzick would try again in the 10
th minute where his shot was saved, and again in the 16
th where he missed just wide. He again had shots in the 21
st and 38
th minute, but to no avail.
Going into halftime with the game tied 0-0, North Central were determined to not take any pressure of the Pioneer defenders despite the frustration at coming close so many times.
The second half was more of the same, with the Cardinals continually coming close to scoring, but not getting the eventual payoff until the latter stages of the half.
Kissel's late game goal was a metaphoric for the Cardinals' season, as never giving up through times of adversity, and keeping the emphasis on the team over the individual again reaped dividends.
North Central looks to make it five straight when they host local rivals Wheaton on senior day, Saturday October 22 at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium. Kickoff is at 4:30 pm, live stats can be found
