Oct. 22, 2016 – In a game that saw them the take the lead early, the North Central College men's soccer team were defeated 4-2 by College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) rivals Wheaton College on Saturday afternoon, at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium
The Cardinals showed no sign of letting up on their recent scintillating for, with junior defender
Jon Borzick missing just wide 8:45 into the game, and senior midfielder
Chandler Olah hitting the cross bar just two minutes.
In the 14
th minute, freshman forward
Alexis Flores continued his stellar play and scored the first goal of the game for the Cardinals, the culmination of excellent start to the match for the team.
Wheaton were determined not to go into halftime with a deficit, and did just that when junior forward Max Carey levelled things up 39:13 into the half.
It didn't take long for Carey and the Thunder to strike again, as they took a 2-1 lead in the opening minutes of the second half, swinging the momentum of the game in the Thunders' favor.
Carey would complete the hat trick, giving the Thunder a 3-1 lead in the 57
th minute, and putting pressure on the Cardinals to come up with something miraculous in order to steal the victory,
The Thunder's talent was on display again in the 80
th minute, when junior forward Josh Greene scored their fourth goal of the match and put the game all but out of reach for the Cardinals.
However, as they have done all season, the Cardinals refused to throw in the towel and did their best to claw back into the contest. Flores, a bright spot for the Cardinals, scored his second goal of the match in the 80
th minute and showed that there is no quit in this team.
With two games remaining, the Cardinals must win both if they hope to secure a bid in the CCIW tournament.
